The Power of Space to Think
During the recent half-term, with my children at home and normal routines disrupted, I realised something important.
Just how much value I gain from having space to think.
Now, before anyone jumps to conclusions, I am absolutely not saying business comes before family. Quite the opposite. My family are one of the biggest drivers behind everything I do.
But what I am saying is this:
As leaders, entrepreneurs and business owners, we must intentionally prioritise time to think.
Because in today’s world, the noise never stops.
There is always another email. Another client call. Another networking event. Another lead to chase. Another problem to solve. Another team meeting. Another staff 1-1. Another deadline.
The list is endless. And the truth is… it always will be.
We are conditioned to do. To move. To push. To create momentum. To stay productive.
And whilst action is incredibly important in business, I’ve realised some of my best ideas, biggest breakthroughs and clearest moments of leadership have not come during the chaos.
They’ve come during the quiet.
When I’ve stepped away. When I’ve slowed down. When I’ve given myself permission to breathe, reflect and think strategically.
Ironically, it can feel counterintuitive. Sometimes even… lazy.
But it’s not lazy at all.
In fact, I’d argue it’s one of the most important responsibilities of leadership.
Because leaders who never stop moving often lose clarity on where they are actually going.
Space to think allows you to,
• Solve problems with greater perspective
• Generate new ideas and opportunities
• Reconnect with your vision and goals
• Reduce overwhelm and regain calm
• Make better strategic decisions
• Lead with greater intentionality rather than reaction
Some of the most important moments in business do not happen in meetings.
They happen with a notebook. A coffee. A walk. A quiet hour before the world wakes up. A moment of stillness where ideas finally have room to breathe.
That is where creativity lives.
That is where strategy develops.
That is where vision grows.
As entrepreneurs and leaders, we often talk about investing in our businesses. But how often do we truly invest in ourselves?
Not just through learning or networking. But through thinking.
Real thinking.
The kind where you capture ideas, dreams, frustrations, goals and possibilities. The kind where you allow yourself to reflect honestly on where you are and where you want to be.
So here’s my encouragement and positive challenge to you.
Wire it into your week.
Daily if you can.
Create protected time to think.
No emails. No notifications. No noise.
Just space.
Because that next breakthrough… That fresh clarity… That solution to the challenge you’ve been wrestling with… That exciting new idea…
It may not come from doing more.
It may come simply because you gave yourself permission to stop long enough to think.
